July 10, 1877/ Mrs. C. V. Wiley/ Your letter of the 5th inst. is received./ We wish a teacher to begin her work/ on the 6th of Sept. The duties are es-/ pecially, the usual training and manage-/ ment of normal classes; gener-/ ally, assisting in the management/ and government of the ladies. de/ partment and the university work./ Of course I had had no knowe/ledge[sic] of the course of study you/ were taking; but a course in/ medicine would not prepare/ one for the work required here./ It is our desire to have our Nor-/ mal department first rate, so that/ we can regularly train young gent-/ lemen and ladies for the work of/ teaching in any of our largest cities./ Such a teacher must come from/ a regular Normal college, or the/ Normal department of a good / college. Added to this she must have/ several years, experience in teaching/ the “Methods” &c./ I should be very glad if it should ever/ come in order if we could add to our faculty a Prof. of medicine./ I opened this correspondence in obe/ dience to the board of trustees, but I/ deem it unnecessary to correspond on/ the matter longer, except you have had/ the training and experience above/ mentioned. If you have had these I/ shall be glad to receive references./ Very truly/ Yours/ B. F. Lee/
