William Still: An African American Abolitionist

In its “Women Physicians 1850s-1970s” section of its archives, Drexel University’s College of Medicine holds several digitized materials concerning Caroline Still Anderson.

The site holds a number of interactive multimedia tools regarding William Still, including an audio commentary, featuring Charles Blockson and Phil Lapsansky discussing Still's first meeting with his brother and the beginning of Still's work on the Underground Railroad.

The site offers correspondence, newspaper clippings, government documents, diaries, and speeches on the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. There is also biographical information about William Still, along with digitized images and letters to him regarding the Underground Railroad.

The Johnson family participated in the American Anti-Slavery Society. Their home served as a station on the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia, PA.

The database indexes William Still's The Underground Railroad (1872) work with a focus on the runaway slaves. The information includes the dates of escape, the location of origin, gender, age, color, literacy, mode of escape, and estimated monetary value of the runaway in and out of the home state.

The Wilbur H. Siebert Collection contains correspondence, notes, manuscripts, student papers, maps, and photographs related to the Underground Railroad.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s digital collection of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers includes William Still’s journal, containing the arrivals of men and women escaping to freedom.  He dated each entry, wrote from where each person left, with whom he/she stayed, and their final destination.
